Two cat treatments, similar packaging, one important difference. If you are comparing Bravecto Spot-On with Bravecto Plus, the extra word on the box means extra parasite coverage, not a longer flea and tick treatment interval.
This guide compares the cat-specific options sold in New Zealand, explains the worms each does and does not treat, and helps you fit the right option into a year-round parasite protection routine. Both belong to the Bravecto range, but they are not interchangeable with the brand's dog treatments.
Quick answer
Bravecto Spot-On provides 3 months of flea and tick control and also treats ear mites. Bravecto Plus provides the same 3-month flea and tick interval, with additional treatment for selected worms, including roundworm and lungworm. Neither treats tapeworm, so a separate tapeworm plan is still needed.
The key differences at a glance
The comparison below is for cats, not dogs. Both products are spot-on treatments applied to the skin, rather than tablets or chews.
| Cat treatment | Flea and tick duration | Ear mites | Worm treatment | Tapeworm | Active ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bravecto Spot-On | 3 months | Treats and controls ear mites | No worm treatment | No | Fluralaner |
| Bravecto Plus | 3 months | Treats ear mites | Roundworm, lungworm, hookworm and capillary worms (Capillaria spp.) | No | Fluralaner and moxidectin |
Hookworm is included on the New Zealand label for Bravecto Plus, although the manufacturer notes that it is not a significant concern for cats in New Zealand. For everyday comparison, roundworm and lungworm are the main extra worm-treatment benefits to recognise.
The 3-month figure describes flea and tick control. Worm treatment is not a promise that your cat cannot pick up worms during that period. Keep any separate worming schedule appropriate to your cat's age and lifestyle.
Which option fits your cat's routine?
When flea and tick control is the priority
Bravecto Spot-On can suit a routine where you want long-lasting flea and tick control and already manage worming separately. It also treats ear mites, but it does not replace a worm treatment.
When you want additional worm treatment
Bravecto Plus can suit a routine where you want flea and tick control alongside treatment for roundworm, lungworm and other worms on its label. It reduces the number of separate treatments needed for those parasites, but leaves a tapeworm gap.
Think about the whole routine before choosing: what has your cat already received, when was it given, and which parasites did it treat? A combination product is useful only when its coverage matches what you need. Avoid adding another treatment just because it has a different name or comes in a different format.
The tapeworm gap matters with both options
Neither Bravecto Spot-On nor Bravecto Plus treats tapeworm. The word “worm” on a pack does not automatically mean every worm is covered.
Cats can pick up flea tapeworm by swallowing an infected flea while grooming. Hunting creates another possible tapeworm exposure. Good flea control helps reduce flea-related risk, but it does not treat an existing tapeworm infection or remove the need to consider tapeworm treatment.
Keep tapeworm on the checklist
For adult cats, Petdirect's year-round guidance includes tapeworm treatment every 3 months alongside either option. Choose a cat treatment that explicitly covers tapeworm and check its directions before combining products. Kittens need a different, age-appropriate worming routine.
When shopping the cat flea and worm range, check the parasites listed on the product, not just whether the description says “wormer” or “combined treatment”. This is especially useful if you are changing from a separate flea treatment and all-wormer to a combination spot-on.
Check your cat's age and weight
In New Zealand, both Bravecto Spot-On and Bravecto Plus are suitable for kittens from 9 weeks of age and a bodyweight of at least 1.2kg. Both conditions must be met. A kitten that meets the weight requirement but is younger than 9 weeks is not eligible.
The cat packs cover three weight ranges:
- 1.2kg to 2.8kg.
- Over 2.8kg to 6.25kg.
- Over 6.25kg to 12.5kg.
Weigh your cat rather than choosing from appearance or an old weight record. This is particularly important for growing kittens and cats whose weight has changed. Do not split a larger tube between cats or substitute a dog pack. Never use dog flea products on cats, as some contain ingredients such as permethrin that are highly toxic to cats.
Apply the spot-on and record the next date
Both cat options use a twist-n-use tube. Read the leaflet supplied with your chosen pack, part the fur and apply directly to the skin at the base of the skull, where your cat cannot easily lick it. For cats up to 6.25kg, the directions use one application spot; larger cats need two spots.
Keep the treatment on the skin rather than the coat, and follow the pack's handling and drying instructions. In a multi-pet home, prevent other pets from grooming the treated area until it is dry.
Record the product, application date and next due date. Both options use a 3-month flea and tick interval, which means four scheduled applications a year. Keep a separate reminder for any additional worm treatment so that one calendar entry does not hide a gap in coverage.
Make flea control a year-round habit
Fleas are not just a summer problem. Warm indoor spaces can support them even when the weather cools, so consistent treatment is more useful than waiting for scratching to start.
Most of a flea infestation is in the environment as eggs, larvae and pupae, not on your cat. Alongside treatment, vacuum carpets, upholstery and favourite resting spots, and wash bedding regularly according to its care label. Use species-appropriate flea protection for the other pets in the household too.
New fleas can emerge while you are clearing an existing infestation. That does not automatically mean you should apply an extra dose early. Stick to the product directions and keep up the household routine. Persistent severe itching or sore skin needs assessment by your vet rather than repeated or overlapping treatments.
Frequently asked questions
Does the “Plus” option last longer?
No. Bravecto Plus and Bravecto Spot-On both provide 3 months of flea and tick control. “Plus” refers to additional parasite treatment, not extra time between flea and tick doses.
Is the standard cat spot-on also an ear mite treatment?
Yes. The New Zealand manufacturer information for Bravecto Spot-On includes treatment and control of ear mites. Bravecto Plus also treats ear mites.
Is either product a complete all-wormer?
No. Bravecto Spot-On does not treat worms, and Bravecto Plus does not treat tapeworm. Check the full parasite list when building your cat's worming routine.
Can I use both cat products together?
Do not combine them as a way to increase protection. Both contain fluralaner, so using them together duplicates that ingredient. If changing treatments, check the timing before giving the replacement.
Does an indoor cat still need flea control?
Indoor living lowers some exposures but does not rule out fleas. Other pets and the home environment can still be sources. Build a routine around your cat's circumstances rather than assuming indoor means no risk.
Does a two-pack mean one dose lasts six months?
No. A two-pack of Bravecto Plus contains two separate scheduled doses. Each provides 3 months of flea and tick control; the second is for the next due date, not for use alongside the first.
What if my kitten is too young or too small?
Do not use either product before both the 9-week and 1.2kg minimums are met. Choose a kitten-appropriate treatment with directions that match their current age and weight.
