Raising a pup is a fun and rewarding experience although it does require a lot of time and patience. Whether you're getting a puppy for the first time or adding to your existing pack there is plenty to consider.

Before getting a new puppy

You've probably been planning the arrival of your new furry friend for months (or even years!) or you might have fallen in love with an unsuspecting stray pup who is suddenly joining your household.

Puppies are certainly hard to resist. What's not to love? But before you choose your new pup consider these important questions.

Where do you live? Think about the property you live in and that your new pup will live. Is it a house or an apartment, big yard or no yard. Is your property well fenced so your pup can run around and play safely. Consider the breed size and size of your pup once they are fully grown. A Labrador is obviously not an ideal choice if you live in an apartment! If you are in a rental make sure to get your landlords permission before buying that new pup.
Which pup is right for you? Consider the different breeds and what their individual needs are. Do these fit in with your families lifestyle?
Will they be left alone regularly? Dogs love company, if your pup will be left home alone during the day consider how they will be kept entertained. Consider a dog walking or daycare service.
Consider your budget. Owning a pet comes at a cost. Food, flea treatment, accessories, grooming and trips to the vet will all add to your household budget. You also need to consider additional expenses such as pet insurance and boarding kennels.
Breeder or adoption, where is your new pup coming from? Ensure your new pup is coming from a reputable dog breeder or adoption centre. If adopting from a breeder, you should receive copies of lineage and necessary health testing for the breed.
