13 Reasons to Love Black Cats

Posted by PetDirect on 12th Aug 2021

Black cats have a hard time getting adopted out of shelters for a variety of silly reasons. Some people think they’re scary and others think they won’t show up well in selfies. Nobody should be judged by the colour of their fur. Superstition and ignorance have given black beauties a bad rap, but under that ebony fur beats true blue hearts.

Here are 13 reasons to love black cats:

    1. Black coats will never go out of style, and any coloured accessory will suit them. Plus, black cats will never clash with any colour you’re wearing too.
    2. You can give them exotic names like Shadow, Midnight, Sable, Jet, Onyx, Raven or Panther.
    3. There is no one black cat breed. There are 22 different breeds with solid black coats including the British Shorthair, Norwegian Forest Cat, Japanese Bobtail, and Scottish Fold.
    4. They’ll impress your houseguests by always looking clean, regal and sophisticated (especially with a quick brush through).
    5. Black fur won’t show up on black clothes and most furniture, so won’t have to worry about those little black hairs giving you away as a cat lover.
    6. You won’t need to spend a dollar on a Halloween costume. They’re already dressed perfectly for the occasion - just add some wings for a zooming bat and reward with some tasty treats.
    7. Many black cats have golden eyes, due to high melanin pigment content in their bodies.
    8. Black is slimming, so they will always make you look your best in selfies while looking purr-fect too.
    9. “Star Trek” and “The Simpsons” feature black cats, so fame is probably right around the corner for you and your black bestie.
    10. Black cats are terrific at playing a competitive game of hide and seek. Who wouldn’t want a little ninja at home?
    11. Black cats are always ready for a black tie event - simply add a nice collar.
    12. Black coats can appear a rusty brown colour if they have been sunbathing.
    13. Lots of sports teams have black as their colours (like the All Blacks!), some even have cats as their mascots.

These are just a few reasons that black cats are purr-fect, but it’s not just black cats, all cats are pawsitively amazing creatures! It doesn’t matter what cat you have, you will enjoy fantastic adventures together. But, really, black cats sometimes seem to get a bad rep, so why not show them a little extra love?
