Vidalta (Carbimazole) is a tablet medication primarily used to treat hyperthyroidism in cats where the thyroid gland produces an excessive amount of thyroid hormone, leading to various health issues.
Carbimazole, the active ingredient in Vidalta, works by interfering with the production of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. It inhibits the synthesis of these hormones by preventing the incorporation of iodine into a key step in the production of thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3), which are the primary thyroid hormones.
It is important to follow what your vet has prescribed. Typically, one tablet should be given orally and at the same time each day, preferably in relation to feeding times. Absorption is increased with food. Tablets may be given with or without food as long as this is consistent from day to day. It is important to not break or crush the tablets as this can interfere with their efficacy. It is important to work closely with your veterinarian as dosage adjustments should be based on the cat's clinical assessment and monitored thyroid levels (total thyroxine concentrations, or T4) typically every 3 to 6 months.
Overdose:
In case of a suspected overdose contact your veterinarian immediately or the New Zealand National Poisons Centre immediately (http://www.poisons.co.nz/animal-helpline/) or phone: 0800 869 738).
As a guide, Vidalta is not typically recommended for cats with certain blood disorders, coagulopathies, pregnant or lactating animals. It is important to consult with your veterinarian for advice before starting Vidalta as it may not be a safe option for every animal.
Common reactions can include vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, lethargy, skin issues, and changes in blood parameters. Regular monitoring and veterinary care are highly recommended to manage these side effects.
Store Vidalta at room temperature, away from moisture and light.
