Optimmune® is an eye ointment containing 0.2% Cyclosporin as the active ingredient, primarily used for treating certain eye conditions in dogs. It is commonly prescribed to address dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), and pannus or chronic superficial keratitis (CSK). This medication may also be used for other inflammatory corneal diseases in dogs. Both KCS and CSK are chronic issues requiring ongoing treatment, though Optimmune® is not a cure, it aids in managing these conditions.
The key component of Optimmune® is Cyclosporin, which plays a role in modulating the immune system. It works by inhibiting T cells, a type of white blood cell, thus helping to control the immune response in dogs with KCS or CSK. This action reduces inflammation on the eye's surface and promotes tear production from the lacrimal gland. Improved tear production and reduced inflammation can significantly alleviate the symptoms of dry eye and pannus in dogs.
Following your veterinarian's specific instructions for Optimmune® is essential. As a general guideline, the ointment is typically applied every 12 hours. Take care to prevent the applicator tip from touching the eye to avoid contamination. If your dog is being treated with additional eye drops, inform your veterinarian. You might need to wait between applying Optimmune® and other eye drops. Always consult with your veterinarian prior to discontinuing the use of Optimmune® as abruptly stopping the medication can result in rapid relapse and deterioration of the eye.
Missed Dose:
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered. If the next dose is due soon, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Avoid doubling up on doses.
Optimmune should not be used if pre-existing viral or fungal eye infections are present. Avoid use in puppies, pregnant bitches, or dogs used for breeding. On rare occasions, Optimmune can cause stinging. If this persists beyond a few days, consult vet and treatment should be withdrawn.
In some cases, the following side effects may occur:
If your dog exhibits new or worsening symptoms, please consult your veterinarian.
Store Optimmune® in a controlled room temperature and keep the container tightly closed to protect from moisture and light. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Routine tear production tests and eye examinations might be suggested by your veterinarian. Other tests could be advised depending on your dog’s individual health and other medications.
