Ciprofloxacin (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride)

Ciprofloxacin eye drops are a topical antibiotic that is prescribed off-label to treat eye infections in cats and dogs. Ciprofloxacin is used to treat eye conditions such as bacterial infections (conjunctivitis and keratitis) or corneal ulcers.

Ciprofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It disrupts the DNA formation in susceptible bacteria during replication, hindering their growth and multiplication.

Always follow your veterinarian's instructions when administering Ciprofloxacin. It's crucial to avoid touching the eye or any surface with the dropper or ointment tip to prevent contamination of the product. Always adhere to the dosage and administration instructions provided by your veterinarian, as these can vary based on the specific infection being treated.

Missed a Dose:

If you miss a dose, consult your veterinarian. They may suggest giving it when remembered or, if it's nearly time for the next dose, to skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Avoid giving extra or double doses.

It's crucial to be aware that Ciprofloxacin and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics have been known to affect cartilage development in young, growing animals. Compared to other antibiotics of its class, Ciprofloxacin has relatively poor absorption. As a result, veterinarians might choose a different fluoroquinolone that is more suited for veterinary use. Possible side effects of include local irritation (redness, itching, or swelling around the eyes), tearing or watering of the eye, mild discomfort or stinging, cloudiness or changes in vision (rare), and sensitivity to light. Store Ciprofloxacin in a securely sealed container, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Ensure to not freeze the solution. Dispose of unused medication 4 weeks after opening.

What if my pet is on other eye drops?

• If your pet is prescribed more than one type of eye medication, ensure there is a gap of at least 5 to 10 minutes between each application, unless your veterinarian advises differently.

How long does Ciprofloxacin take to work?

• The medication typically starts to work within 1 to 2 hours of application. However, it may take a few days before the improvement is visibly noticeable. Consult your veterinarian on what to expect with your pet.
