The AeroKat chamber is a device specifically designed for cats to administer aerosol medication to the lungs as prescribed by a veterinarian. It's typically used alongside an inhaler (e.g. Flixotide) to ensure the medication is effectively inhaled. This is commonly recommended for cats experiencing respiratory issues such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, or allergic rhinitis. The AeroKat also features an antistatic polymer, reducing static cling and ensuring the medication is effectively inhaled.
While your vet will provide specific guidance, this is a general overview:
Remove the cap and shake the inhaler.
Insert the inhaler into the back of the chamber and attach the mask to the opposite end.
Gently place the mask over your cat's face, covering the nose and mouth.
Press the inhaler to release the medication. Movement or fluttering of the Flow-Vu indicates an adequate seal.
Administration typically involves only a few breaths over 15 seconds, or as prescribed by your vet.
With training, lots of cats will voluntarily be treated with the AeroKat chamber. It is important to create a positive experience for your cat when using the AeroKat chamber. Before and after treatment, give your cat lots of treats, praise, play and affection so that it associates treatment with positive, enjoyable experiences. Before treatment, you can place your cat's favourite treats in the mask, and let your cat eat them from the mask, so that your cat associates the mask with treats.
It's essential to regularly clean both the inhaler and the chamber for hygiene and effective delivery of medication. Always adhere to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
While AeroKat itself is a delivery device and not a medication, the reactions are typically related to the medication being administered. Consult with your veterinarian about the potential side effects of the medication. If you believe your cat is experiencing side effects, or is getting worse, contact your veterinarian immediately.
