This is a prescription medication. Before purchasing it, your veterinarian must have issued a prescription. Always give as directed by your veterinarian. Keep out of reach of children and pets, and store as directed. This information is not intended to replace advice from your veterinarian.

Additional Information

Understanding KCS and CSK in Dogs

Chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), also known as dry eye, and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK), commonly referred to as pannus, are significant eye conditions that affect dogs. These conditions can lead to discomfort, reduced vision, and if untreated, potentially blindness. Optimmune® Ophthalmic Ointment, containing Cyclosporin as its active ingredient, offers a prescription-based solution to manage these eye problems effectively.

What Causes KCS and CSK?

KCS occurs when there's insufficient tear production to keep the eyes moist, leading to dry, irritated eyes. CSK involves the cornea's inflammation and can result in pigmentation and scarring. Factors contributing to these conditions include autoimmune diseases, genetic predisposition, and in some cases, infections or injuries.

Signs and Symptoms

The common signs of KCS include a dry appearance to the eye, discharge, redness, and frequent blinking or squinting. CSK symptoms encompass a cloudy or pigmented cornea, vision impairment, and eye irritation. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing these conditions.

How is Optimmune Ophthalmic Ointment Used?

Optimmune is specifically designed for the treatment of KCS and CSK in dogs. It works by increasing natural tear production and reducing inflammation. For KCS, a 6 mm strip of ointment is applied to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours. For CSK, a 6-10 mm strip is recommended for the same frequency. Continuous treatment may be necessary for the lifetime of the dog to manage these conditions effectively.

Monitoring and Care at Home

Regular monitoring by a veterinarian is essential to adjust treatment as needed. At home, owners should ensure the application of the ointment as prescribed and monitor their pet for any adverse reactions or improvement in symptoms.

Prognosis

With consistent treatment, the prognosis for dogs with KCS and CSK is generally good. Early intervention can prevent complications such as corneal scarring and vision loss.

Preventative Care

While some causes of KCS and CSK are genetic and cannot be prevented, maintaining good eye hygiene and protecting your dog’s eyes from injuries can help reduce the risk of developing these conditions.

FAQs Section

Can Optimmune cure KCS and CSK?

Optimmune is designed to manage symptoms and prevent progression but is not a cure. Lifelong treatment may be required.

Is Optimmune safe for all dogs?

Optimmune is safe for most dogs, but its use in puppies, pregnant bitches, or dogs used for breeding has not been determined.

How quickly does Optimmune work?

It may take several days to a few weeks before significant improvements are observed.

What should I do if my dog experiences stinging with Optimmune?

Stinging is uncommon and should subside within a week of treatment, however, if your pet is distressed, or if it persists, consult your veterinarian.

Can I stop using Optimmune® if my dog’s eyes improve?

Abrupt discontinuation can lead to relapse. Always follow your vet’s guidance.
