Caninsulin®, containing the active ingredient insulin, is a medication prescribed to treat diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs. In a diabetic pet, the body is unable to produce its own insulin. Caninsulin works as replacement insulin, allowing the glucose in the blood to be absorbed and lowering the blood glucose levels.

What Causes Diabetes in Pets?

Diabetes mellitus in pets results from the pancreas's inability to produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This condition leads to an inability to regulate blood sugar levels, requiring external insulin administration for management.

Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes in Pets

Pets with diabetes may exhibit increased thirst, increased urination, and weight loss despite having a good appetite, lethargy, and a dull coat. Recognising these signs early is crucial for timely treatment.

How is Diabetes Treated in Pets?

Treatment involves insulin therapy, such as Caninsulin, to manage blood glucose levels. It's also accompanied by diet modifications, regular exercise, and close monitoring of blood glucose levels.

Monitoring and Care at Home

Pet owners play a crucial role in managing their pets' diabetes by regularly monitoring their pets' symptoms, administering insulin properly, and maintaining a consistent feeding schedule.

Prognosis

With proper management, pets with diabetes can lead to a good quality of life. Regular veterinary check-ups are vital to adjust treatment as needed.

Preventative Care

Preventing diabetes involves maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and regular exercise. Regular veterinary check-ups can help catch and manage potential health issues early.
