Choosing a lead for you and your dog

Posted by PetDirect on 23rd Jan 2022

A dog lead is one of the most important dog accessories for your furry friend. Surprised? It’s more than just a way to keep your dog close when you go for a walk. The right dog lead gives your pup freedom to explore and make their mark on the world while keeping them safe.

But, there are important considerations for your dog as well as for you, like comfort of handle and ease of managing the lead length. So how do you make the right choice for you and your dog?

To select the best possible dog lead, consider your canine’s size and temperament. For example, is your dog a 50kg puller or a petite and polite walker? Then think about where you'd go for walks as a hike in the bush may require a different type of lead than walking on a busy sidewalk. For you, how does the handle feel when you hold it, how is the weight and maneuverability of the lead itself?

To help you choose the best-fit dog lead, here are 6 of the most commonly used dog leads and their functions.

1. The Basic Dog Lead

This classic lead is an all-purpose option for everyday walks.

Typically made of nylon or cotton webbing, a standard flat lead ranges from 90cm - 180cm long. Most dogs will do well with 100cm long leashes for neighbourhood strolls, as this gives pups room for safe exploration. Basic leads, like the EzyDog Essentials Leash, are also durable and easy to clean in the washing machine.

You should also consider the thickness of the lead and weight of the clasp when selecting a basic dog lead, because one size doesn’t necessarily fit all. The Rogz Classic Dog Lead, for example, comes in different lengths and thicknesses, so there’s an option for every pup, from a lil' Toy Poodle to a buff Bullmastiff.

2. The Retractable Dog Lead

Retractable leads feature a thin, tension loaded cord inside a plastic handle that’s controlled with a locking mechanism. Many pet parents appreciate the contoured handle and the freedom dogs have while on a retractable lead, with lengths ranging from 300cm to over 600cm. Because of the variable length, flexible leads might give dogs more opportunity to explore and exercise while on walks.

The Flexi range of retractable dog leads, for example, is designed to be comfortable for human and canine walkers alike, with a soft, ergonomic handle and a smooth retraction system. The room to roam afforded by the flexible lengths allows dogs to dash and sniff during neighbourhood walks.

If used improperly, retractable leads can cause rope burns and other injuries. This is something to consider if your dog is still training as dogs may quickly learn that pulling extends the lead. We recommend starting with the a basic dog lead while training your dog or they are getting use to walking on a lead.

Note: Aways review the manufacturer’s safety suggestions to reduce the risk of injury. Retractable leashes require special safety considerations. Dogs walking close to a busy street may be at risk if you cannot engage the locking mechanism quickly.

3. The Hands-Free Dog Lead

A hands-free dog lead is exactly what it sounds like - it connects you to your dog during walks without you needing to hand hold a lead. These types of leashes can fit around the waist or over the shoulder. Since hands-free leads rest closer to the walker’s center of gravity, they’re a great option for anyone concerned about holding onto a traditional lead while needing to hold onto other things.

For example, runners might find them easier to use since they don’t have to modify their arm movements to accommodate holding a leash. They’re also a great option for people with babies or small children, since a hands-free dog lead enables pet parents to keep two hands on the stroller instead of trying to juggle the leash and stroller together.

Note: There can be limitations with this type of leash such as if your dog outweighs you. A hands-free lead may not be the best fit as you might get pulled and find it difficult to regain control.

Another option to consider are leashes that can be worn like a glove on your hand, like the EzyDog Handy Leash that can be attached to the collar or other longer leads. This provides similar control to holding a leash while providing more freedom to hold onto other things during walks or runs.

4. The Double Dog Lead

Walking multiple pups can be tough with tangled up leashes, dogs pulling in opposite direction, walking around each other or things, and having to juggle the dogs with one hand while cleaning up with the other. Find relief with the double lead like the EzyDog Vario 6 Multi-Function Leash or Rogz Multi Dog Lead.

Depending on the dogs, a lead coupler accessory may also work for walking multiple dogs. A lead coupler provides two seperate lead lines that can connect to a single lead, helping to make it easier to manage 2 (or even 4) dogs during walks. The coupler is typically made of nylon, rope or cotton webbing that is strong enough for even oversized dogs with snap hooks or carabiner to attach to a collar or lead.

The coupler accessory and double leads are great options for dogs going on familiar daily strolls. It’s best if both dogs are close in size and walking style, because the single handle requires tandem movement and cooperation. So, a double leash or coupler might not be a great fit if one canine walker likes to forge ahead and the other prefers to stop and sniff.

It's also worth considering that the pressure of two dogs is transferred to a single handle or lead, so comfort for your hand is critical as well control. The EzyDog Cujo Leash provides a firm wakeboarding non-slip handle with shock-absorbing design to keep your dog safe while keeping you comfortably in control with couplers.

5. The Leather Dog Lead

A leather lead marries classic style and durability. They’re ideal for dogs of all sizes and walking styles. They’re strong enough for dogs that pull, but not at the expense of the comfort of the pet parent or dog since they’re lightweight.

They typically range from 30cm - 180cm long. Leather leashes come in a variety of colors, from traditional brown and black to a rainbow assortment. These leashes often feature embellishments, like braiding near the clasp or metal details like the EzyDog Oxford Leather Leash.

Most leather leashes feel stiff at first and soften after a breaking-in period. While they’re great for dogs of all sizes and ages, many puppies can’t resist the flavour of leather, so wait to invest until your pup outgrows the teething phase!

Unlike cotton or nylon leashes, leather leads require care to keep them in peak condition. Avoid getting them wet, and an annual cleaning and conditioning oil treatment will help them last much longer. A leather lead that’s gotten wet repeatedly without proper conditioning can snap in half from brittleness, so always inspect your leather lead for wear and tear to keep your dog safe.

Tip: Pair it with the EzyDog Oxford Leather Collar to complete the stylish look.

6. The Long Dog Lead

This dog training lead is an option for working on distance behaviours, like outdoor obedience exercises. Long leashes live up to their name with some extending as far out as 10m.

Made of flat cotton webbing or nylon rope, these leads can help prep dogs for eventual off-lead work. They help keep your dog safe while giving them room to make choices. Long-line leads also perform double duty for hiking dogs or park visits where they can have more freedom to explore but it is required thats dogs stay on a lead.

While long leashes are great for training and hiking, the additional length can be challenging on the average walk around the block. Trying to manage an extra-long lead and a poop bag while focusing on your dog’s safety can feel like puppeteering, so stick with a standard leash for those neighbourhood walks.

Finding the best fit for both you and your dog takes time, but it’s a worthwhile effort. The humble lead is your lifeline when you and your furry friend are out in the world together, so choose wisely and you’ll enjoy many happy strolls together.
