This year we are celebrating Easter in lockdown, which will be very strange for most of us. While we must stay at home and avoid seeing friends and family, we can still celebrate with our pets (and eat twice the amount of treats to compensate). Cats and dogs cannot eat chocolate because it contains Theobromine, a compound that is highly poisonous to our furry friends. Don’t fret, you can still enjoy your Easter chocolate while your pet has some safe treats of their own. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite oh-so-yummy, special occasion treats for your cats and dogs below.
Dog Treats
Peanut Butter
This is the creme de la creme of treats for your dog. Whether you stuff it inside a KONG, on a lick mat or let them have it straight of the spoon; It’s guaranteed your pooch will know they have been a good boy/girl as soon as that crunchy goodness hits their tongue.
Chicken
Oh boy, what a treat. While your pup is thinking they’ve won the lottery with a mouthful of cooked chicken, each bite is actually promoting muscle growth. The Omega-6 fatty acids will help sustain healthy skin and super shiny coats, so they’ll come out of lockdown with the body of Thor and the super sleek hair of Rapunzel. Winning!
Popcorn
Because what’s a Netflix marathon without the snacks? Un-salted, un-buttered, air popped popcorn is the movie snack of your dog’s dreams. Bring the blanket, bring the snacks and bring your popcorn catching A game; because the only thing that makes this treat tastier is throwing it up in the air and catching it on your tongue. (Please note: pyjamas are mandatory).
Ziwi Treats
Picture your favourite snack in the entire world. Got it? Take that mouthwatering feeling and times it by 10. That’s what Ziwi’s range of treats is like for your pup. One taste will have them thinking it must be their birthday. For longer lasting goodness, try the liver coated lambs ears or the venison shank.
Cat Treats
Salmon
Feeling a bit fancy? Why not indulge in a fish dinner with your feline friend? Cooked salmon is full of Omega 3 for both you and your cat, so you’ll both be reaping the benefits. Want to give your kitty a salmon snack without the cooking and cleaning? Try Omega Plus’ King Salmon Pet Treats.
Cheese (only certain varieties)
What better way to indulge with your cat than to share some cheese? Cottage, Swiss and Gouda are all okay to give to your cat in moderation. Cheese is a purrfect source of both calcium and protein for your cat. Add a cracker, a glass of wine (for yourself not the cat) and an episode of your favourite reality TV show, and voila you’ve got the purr-fect night in.
The NZ Natural Pet Food Co. Meow Treats
We’ve never been so tempted to taste the cat’s treats (don’t worry, we didn’t). These freeze dried morsels of perfection are made using only the highest quality ingredients such as duck, beef, Manuka honey and green lipped muscles. The gentle freeze-drying process protects all the natural enzymes and nutrients, so none of the wholesome goodness is cooked out. Bonus: the packaging is very worthy of a snap for your cat’s insta
